Realizing the Dream

“Once in awhile the dream comes true and we always appreciate being a part
of it” said Steve Potter, Pacific International League Secretary. On
Saturday, July 12th, the dream was once again realized at the Kamloops
International Baseball Tournament. Seattle Studs pitcher, Bobby McEwen
of Mill Creek, WA, signed a contract to play professional baseball for the
Milwaukee Brewers organization.
McEwen later explained, “I thought I was done, after four years at Gonzaga
University and three seasons with the Santa Barbara Forresters of the
California Central Baseball League, I thought it was over, the dream of
playing professional baseball not to be realized. I had taken the year off,
was working full time and coaching when Coach Aden called. He
convinced me to give it one more shot, no pressure, just back to enjoying the
game.” It turned out to be a wise choice.
When asked about what the opportunity to play with Seattle Studs meant to
him, Bobby responded, “Everything; this would never have happened
without the PIL. Every game in this league is an opportunity, the
competitive level is always there. I thought I was done, if it had not been for
Coach Aden’s help, support, and encouragement, this would not have
happened.
“This is one example of why we are out here volunteering our time” said
Steve Konek, PIL President, “to assit these young men in achieving their
goals, presenting the opportunity.” Konek went on to explain: “In other
leagues, Bobby would not have had this opportunity. He would not have
been allowed to participate. ‘Collegiate Leagues’ restrict these seniors and
older players, relying only on the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors.”
Konek added, “I want to thank the KIBT, a first class, highly competitive,
tournament and able to keep a secret!”
