At their January 14th board of directors winter meeting, the Pacific International League announced the appointment of Brian Gooch to the office of League Commissioner. Upon his retirement from upper level officiating, Brian is looking forward to more time with wife Evelyn and their 12 grandchildren. Brian is employed as Sales Manager for Western Van and Storage/Agent Allied Van Lines. “Since day one, I have always said, when I quit umpiring this league I still want to be involved in someway and I welcome this opportunity” said Brian upon his acceptance.

A member of the Northwest Baseball Umpires Association, Brian has been a NCAA Division 1 official for 23 years. He has officiated in the Western International League and Pacific International League for a total of 25 years, also serving as a PIL Tournament Umpire for 5 years along with umpiring the Goodwill Games in 1990. Brian counts his most memorable game as “…..the 1984 Western Division 1 Regional, working the plate, Randy Johnson on the mound and Mark Mcquire on first base.”

Brian will be replacing Seth Dawson who has served the past ten years in the post. Seth resigned to concentrate his efforts in his new position of President of Operations for the Everett Merchants Baseball Club along with announcing Everett Community College games in the spring.

“The Commissioner of the Pacific International League is responsible for the conduct of the season; to maintain a wholesome and positive family atmosphere through the process of developing player opportunity” explained Steve Konek Sr., PIL President. “We have strived to maintain an independent commissioner who can make the tough decisions during the season.” Konek added, “We are very greatfull to Seth Dawson for his donation of time/effort and for the excellent job he has done over the past ten years; the PIL would not be in the position it is today if not for Seth. At the same time, we have worked with Brian for many years and are looking forward to his continued contribution in his new capacity .”
