BURNABY WIN BASEBALL CANADA SENIOR MEN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
AUGUST 30, 2010 - Burnaby, BC: After a scare in game 1 in which the Bulldogs lost 8-0 to New Brunswick (Chatham), the Bulldogs would go onto win five straight games to win the 2010 Baseball Canada Senior Men National Championship.
The championship game featured a pitchers duel between Dartmouth hurler Marek Deska and tournament MVP Steve McCrea of Burnaby. Deska struck out the side in the first and the fifth innings on his way to a three-hit, 10 strikeout performance.
The lone run came in the 4th inning when Kevin Atkinson belted a 2-2 pitch out of the ball park for a solo homerun. It was Atkinson’s third home run of the tournament. McCrea was virtually perfect the rest of the way as he only allowed one base runner in his last three innings of work, which came on a walk.
“It was a tight ball game and I felt like anybody could win it,” said Atkinson, named Burnaby’s player of the game. “He threw me a good pitch and I just found the barrel and got it out of the park.”
Founded in the fall of 1992, the PIL is considered by many to be the premier Summer Collegiate Baseball league in the Northwest. Most PIL players are NCAA eligible and are unpaid in order to maintain their eligibility. The PIL is different from many other summer collegiate baseball leagues in that the league also allows former professionals and college graduates to participate.
