PIL ALUMNI NAMED TO MLB ALL-STAR GAME
JULY 3, 2011 - New York, NY: Two former Pacific International League players have been named to the 2011 All-Star as announced by Major League Baseball. Tim Lincecum was named to the National League team and Jacoby Ellsbury will play for the American League Team. The All-Star selection for Lincecum is his fourth and the first for Ellsbury.
Lincecum has a 6-7 record with a 3.14 ERA with 126 strike outs in only 117 innings pitched heading into the break. In the summer of 2004, following his freshman year at the University of Washington, he played for the Seattle Studs and won two games in the NBC World Series that year. He is a two-time (2008 and 2009) National League Cy Young award winner and 2010 World Series champion.
Ellsbury is batting .302 in 82 games for the Red Sox this season, tallying 23 doubles and nine home runs. He has also swiped 26 bases this season, placing him third in Major League and first amongst all AL players. He played for the Bend Elks in 2002 where he hit .357 and was named to the PIL All-Star team. He would go onto play at Oregon State and was eventually drafted by the Red Sox in the first round in 2005.
"You're going to be playing with the best players in the game," Ellsbury told MLB.com from Houston where the Red Sox were facing the Astros. "It's always been a dream of mine to play in this game. It's here, so I'm excited."
The 82nd midsummer classic will be played on July 12 at Chase Field in Phoenix.
Founded in the fall of 1992, the PIL is considered by many to be the premier Summer Collegiate Baseball league in the Northwest. Most PIL players are NCAA eligible and are unpaid in order to maintain their eligibility. The PIL is different from many other summer collegiate baseball leagues in that the league also allows former professionals and college graduates to participate.
