MERCHANTS TO PLAY IN ALASKA NEXT SUMMER
OCTOBER 27, 2011 - EVERETT, WA: The Everett Merchants have officially announced that they will be traveling to Alaska to take on teams from the Alaska Baseball League (ABL) in June. This will be the first time that the Merchants will be traveling to Alaska.
The team is scheduled to play nine games from June 18 through the 25th. The Merchants are scheduled to play the Anchorage Bucs (18th and 23rd), the Alaska Goldpanners (19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd) and the Peninsula Oilers (23rd, 24th 6/25th)
The game against the Goldpanners on the 21st will be in the historic Midnight Sun Game. The Midnight Sun Game is a played every summer solstice at Growden Memorial Park in Fairbanks. Because the sun is out for almost 24 hours a day, the game starts at about 10:30 at night and completes around 1:30 the next morning.
ABL teams have captured sixteen National Baseball Congress World Series championships since the league since 1974. The Alaska Goldpanners have won 6; Anchorage Glacier Pilots, 5; Peninsula Oilers, 3; and the Mat-Su Miners, 2. Barry Bonds, Steve Finley, Jason Giambi, Randy Johnson, Bill Lee, Mark McGwuire, John Olerud, Tom Seaver, Dave Windifeld and Michael Young are just a few of the alumni of the ABL.
Founded in the fall of 1992, the PIL is considered by many to be the premier Summer Collegiate Baseball league in the Northwest. Most PIL players are NCAA eligible and are unpaid in order to maintain their eligibility. The PIL is different from many other summer collegiate baseball leagues in that the league also allows former professionals and college graduates to participate.
