Strong pitching leads Studs to 7-1 victory over Select

By Luke Olson

Mitchel Viydo continued to show his legitimacy this season with yet again another strong outing. The College of Idaho grad, more formerly known for his stint in the Mariners organization last season–sailed through seven complete innings, allowing just one earned run, five hits, one walk and ten strikeouts.

He befuddled Seattle Select in the first round of the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament and the offense would provide plenty for a 7-1 victory on Thursday to improve the Studs record to 23-3.

Viydo’s record is now 5-0 on the season and representing an impressive 0.84 ERA.

The Studs’ put a run on the board early, taking advantage of a throwing error in the bottom of the first with one out. Kyle Boe knocked a single to right to score Collin Wolf. Later in the fourth, they added two more with Jacob Hirsh’s bases loaded, two-out double for the Studs’ to grab a 3-0 lead.

The game was put away in the sixth with Henry Cheney leading off the inning with a double. Again, the Studs’ took advantage of a throwing error by the third baseman to put runners on first and third. Cody Banks single got them loaded, but the Select’s would hiatus the momentum by two crucial fly-outs in the infield. Once again, the Select’s were dealt with a bases loaded, two-out jam with Landon Riker up to the plate–and he would capitalize with a single to score one runner. Wolf would create more implosion with his bases clearing double to give his team a 7-0 lead.

Viydo’s lone mistake came in the top of the eight after he surrendered a lead-off double, but was pulled immediately for Collin Maier. A fly out advanced the runner, but Leighton Moniz drove him home to get the Select’s on the board for the first time. Maier mowed down his next two batters to get them out of the inning.

The Studs will face off against division rival, Northwest Honkers, in the second round of the tournament today at 3:00 p.m.
