Former Merchant Called Up

Former Everett Merchant pitcher Riley O’Brien, made his major league debut tonight pitching for the Cincinnati Reds against the Chicago White Sox. Riley started the game and pitched 1.1 innings allowing two hits and striking out a pair.

White with the Merchants in 2015, posted a 1-1 record in three games.

This season with the Triple-A Louisville Bats, he had a 7-7 record with 122 strikeouts. In his last start, O’Brien tossed five innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against Toledo.

O’Brien spent two seasons at Everett Community College before transferring to the College of Idaho where he became an All-NAIA West selection in his two seasons while leading the Yotes to the 2016 and 2017 NAIA National Championships.

He was originally selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the eighth round of the 2017 draft out of the College of Idaho and was acquired by the Reds last summer in a trade for lefty reliever Cody Reed.

He is the 17th alumni of the Everett organization to play in the big leagues.
